In the spring of 2016, a group of StSMU students, driven by enthusiasm, ideas and aspirations, inspired by the genius of the great world of surgery, enlisted the support of the head, O.B. Sumkina and staff of the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy, within the walls of our Alma Mater, united into a surgical society. Guided by the words of Nikolai Ivanovich Pirogov that "Any profession is a mystery and a conspiracy against the uninitiated. Surgery is a mystery of mysteries that not everyone can comprehend," our association received the symbolic name "Enigma" (from the ancient Greek αἴνιγμα — a riddle, a mystery).

The purpose of such an association was an attempt to eliminate the shortage of practical skills and knowledge existing in the medical education system, as the outstanding German surgeon, Theodor Billroth said, "Until you make an incision with a lancet yourself, there is no point in talking about surgery," therefore, the credo of our society is "practice above all."

Over the years of its existence, the Enigma Surgical Society has organized many lectures and master classes for everyone in such areas of surgery as urology and transplantation, cardiovascular and abdominal surgery, etc..
Within the walls of the operating room, many experimental operations were performed both on cadaveric material and in vivo. Educational operations, as close as possible to real conditions, allow you to cultivate clinical thinking, simultaneously study clinical anatomy, accesses, algorithms of actions, thereby developing surgical tactics for future doctors.

Over time, the idea of creating the Enigma surgical school project arose, which is a multi-stage course of in-depth practical and theoretical classes in various areas of surgery, designed for students of all courses and residents. And already on April 28, 2017, with the support of the management, at one of the lectures of the Enigma surgical society, the founders announced an open recruitment of participants for the Enigma surgical school project, and in October 2017, the training of the first stream of students began.
В апреле 2018, по итогам практически года обучения, лучшие студенты проекта «Enigma surgical school», совместно с членами хирургического общества «Enigma» отправились в Москву на всероссийскую олимпиаду по хирургии имени М.И. Перельмана.

Today, Enigma is a division of Stavropol Medical University, conducting theoretical and practical training of students and residents in various areas of surgery using modern equipment and under the auspices of specialists in their field, carrying out experimental and scientific-practical activities, conducting lectures and master classes. Members of the Enigma Surgical Society are numerous participants and prize-winners of surgery Olympiads held at the regional, national and global levels.

The company plans to continue to be active in the practical training of students, to contribute to the development of surgery and the formation of decent personnel for the benefit of the country, to develop research activities.
