The work on the creation of the museum complex was started by the staff of the Center for Civil and Military-Patriotic Education in 2009, since 2010 the first excursions have been conducted, the official opening of the museum took place in 2013.
Over the years, a rich museum collection has been collected. In total, there are about 3,500 items in the museum's collection. The main exhibition covers an area of more than 200 square meters. It reflects all the stages of the creation and development of the university, milestones in the history of healthcare in the Stavropol Territory, the past of certain areas of medicine.
Since 2014, the Museum of the History of Stavropol State Medical University has been included in the Register of Medical Museums of Russia – the first official database of historical and medical collections. Materials from the museum's collections are exhibited in the Museum of the Great Patriotic War "Memory", the Museum of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Stavropol Territory, the State Archive of the Stavropol Territory.
The Council for the Development of Historical and Medical Museums and the History of Healthcare of the Scientific and Educational Medical Cluster "North Caucasian" operates on the basis of the museum.
As the volume of scientific work at the museum increased, the university management decided in 2015 to create a scientific center for the study of the history of medicine. Research work is carried out in the following forms: training of scientific personnel; writing monographs and scientific articles; organization and participation in scientific conferences; management of student scientific papers.
A separate area of the center's work was the creation of documentary and historical films dedicated to the past of the university, its outstanding representatives, the history of medicine and the Great Patriotic War. The plot and content of the films are based on the results of the center's own scientific research.
The staff of the center are members of the Russian Society of Medical Historians and regularly participate in its events, prepare students to participate in the All-Russian Olympiad on the History of Medicine.
Since its foundation, the center has been headed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Andrey Vladimirovich Kartashev. Alexander Konstantinovich Kuryanov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honored Doctor of the RSFSR, University veteran, conducts extensive educational and public work. The museum staff – Svetlana Mikhailovna Duginets and Igor Vladimirovich Kartashev – are highly qualified specialists conducting independent scientific research on a number of scientific topics. During their work at the center, they prepared and defended dissertations for the degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences.
