The system of additional professional education at StSMU has existed for more than 50 years, when, at the request of the rector of the Stavropol State Medical Institute, Professor Vladislav Yuryevich Pervushin, by Order of the Ministry of Health of the RSFSR No. 349 dated December 11, 1965, the Stavropol Medical Institute received the right to conduct advanced training cycles for doctors.
Professor Arkady Mikhailovich Prokhorsky, a prominent scientist, an energetic and reasonable person who made a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty, headed the Faculty of Advanced Medical Education.
The opening of the faculty and the creation of specialized departments served as the basis for the formation of a training base within the framework of continuous medical professional training of doctors for Stavropol and nearby regions - the Southern and North Caucasian Federal Districts.
At the beginning of the faculty's work, which was gradually gaining strength, thematic improvement of internists, surgeons and obstetricians-gynecologists was carried out, and on January 3, 1967, the specialization of doctors in neurology, otorhinolaryngology, eye diseases and forensic medicine began.
The formation of the Faculty of postgraduate and additional education took place thanks to the comprehensive assistance of the administration of the Institute in the person of rectors Associate Professor Yu.P. Mikhailichenko, Professor V.V. Bodulin, Professor B.D. Minaev, Professor V.N. Muravyeva, Professor V.I. Koshel, as well as deans, who headed the faculty in different years and gave their strength and knowledge for development Its departments are designed to turn into a team capable of solving all tasks related to the training of doctors at a high professional level.

Since January 1, 2011, the Stavropol State Medical Academy, by the decision of the Academic Council, has opened the Institute of Postgraduate and Additional Education (IPAE), which united the previously existing 2 faculties: the Faculty of Postgraduate and Additional Education (FPAE) and the Faculty of Advanced Training of Teachers (FATT).
Associate Professor A.Ya. Sohach has been appointed Director. Professor Nadezhda Vladimirovna Agranovich, MD, was elected Dean of the Faculty of Higher Education by competition.
In April 2011, the institute moved to an almost new, renovated building at 8 Morozova St., building 4, which, in addition to the management, housed the deaneries of the FPAE and the FATT, the Department of Postgraduate education (internship and residency), the department of advanced training and professional training of doctors, the certification department, the department for work with practical healthcare and graduates, the department pedagogy, psychology and special disciplines, a computer lab, the hall of the Academic Council of the Institute and classrooms.
Currently, it is the largest institute of additional vocational education in the South of Russia (Director of the Institute of Advanced Vocational Education, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Agranovich Nadezhda Vladimirovna), which includes two large faculties: vocational education and additional vocational education (Dean, PhD, Associate Professor Gatilo I.A.) and teacher training (Dean, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Gorbunkov V.Ya.). which currently provides professional retraining and advanced training of doctors and secondary health workers for practical healthcare not only in the Stavropol Territory, but also throughout the South and other regions of Russia.
The main task of this structural unit of the university is to make the process of updating the professional knowledge of specialists and expanding the range of their skills truly innovative, meeting the needs of practical healthcare. To this end, the institute has developed and is implementing more than 2.5 thousand PC and PP training programs, modern remote, electronic and simulation educational technologies are constantly being introduced into the educational process, a video studio for recording lectures has been opened, a mechanism for accumulating credit points has been developed and prospects for continuous professional education and improvement are opening up for medical workers.
IAPE employs 30 doctors of sciences, 17 of them with the academic title of professor, 85 candidates of sciences, 42 of them with the academic title of associate professor and conduct training in 73 specialties.
The clinical departments of the APEInstitute are located on the bases of regional and urban medical institutions, equipped with modern technology, in particular, high–tech simulator equipment - simulators and virtual computer simulators for mastering practical manual skills in endoscopic surgery, are annually replenished with modern innovative teaching methods.
During the year of study at the Institute of Additional Professional Education, 6,000 to 10,000 doctors and secondary medical workers are trained in professional retraining and advanced training cycles, as well as about 500 teachers of the university and other medical educational institutions improve their pedagogical skills.
In 2019 IAPE StSMU became one of the winners of the competition in the field of additional vocational education "The best institutions of additional vocational education of the Russian Federation - 2019".
The work of the Faculty of Additional Professional Education takes place in close connection with practical healthcare, which contributes to the introduction into practice of the latest methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and further improvement of the quality and accessibility of medical care to the population. The staff of the Institute constantly provides great methodological, therapeutic and advisory assistance to the practical health care of the region.
